Ministry of Labour Inspection Blitz: New and Young Workers
During June, Ontario Ministry of Labour (MOL) inspectors will be conducting a health and safety inspection blitz on the following sectors:
-
service (e.g., retail, restaurant, tourism, wholesale, vehicle sales, service)
-
manufacturing, and
-
extended workplaces (e.g., golf courses, temporary amusement parks, tree planting operations, landscaping, painting job sites, parks and recreation locations).
Special focus will be on training, orientation, supervision, minimum age and personal protective equipment for (a) young, new workers (14 - 24 years) and (b) new older workers (25+ years) who have been on the job less than 6 months or reassigned to a new job. In addition, inspectors will monitor for hazards and ensure Health & Safety Representatives or Joint Health & Safety Committees (JHSCs) are in place and functioning as required.
This blitz is part of the province’s “Safe At Work Ontario” strategy launched in 2008 which aims to improve workplace health and safety practices through education, training, and enforcement of provincial legislation and regulations.
Surviving summer – the tragic story of an injured young worker
He wanted to earn some extra spending money. Instead, he earned himself a trip to the hospital, a body full of scars, and a story that no one should have to tell. Eric Olivieri was 16 when he suffered a serious workplace injury. Hear him recall what happened, the extent of his injuries, his recovery, and the lessons that he learned along the way.

Products & Training
IAPA provides a comprehensive portfolio of health and safety training solutions including:
First 4 Weeks" Health & Safety Orientation (self-study kit and on-site training)
"First 4 Weeks" is an innovative self-directed, multimedia program with a difference – it trains the supervisor (or person responsible for health and safety orientation in the company), in addition to young and new or inexperienced workers of any age. This award winning program goes beyond traditional general orientation by delivering a customizable approach to job-specific health and safety orientation. The full kit contains two training components: The Worker's Program (also available separately) and the unique Supervisor’s Program. “First 4 Weeks” also can be delivered on-site for companies looking for help in training several supervisors and workers. This option utilizes a combination of facilitator-lead large group and self-directed learning.

Supervisor’s Certificate Program (public and on-site training)
