IAPA’s Awards Program Helps Ensure Workplace Health and Safety

Mississauga , Ontario – September 10, 2008 - IAPA (Industrial Accident Prevention Association) proudly presented GE - Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. Tubing with its second IAPA Health & Safety Achievement Award of 2008 today at its Arnprior, Ontario facility. The firm was recognized earlier this year with a Level I Health & Safety Achievement Award and its ongoing efforts towards achieving health and safety excellence culminated in today’s Level II Award. The facility produces zirconium tubes used to make nuclear fuel bundles and fuel channel components.

Health and safety is part of GE - Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. Tubing’s culture. It’s corporate environmental, health, and safety program, GE Global Star addresses 21 aspects of health and safety to ensure the facility maintains the well-being of its workers. Employees are encouraged to play active roles in making their facility an injury and illness-free workplace by volunteering in company environmental, health, and safety initiatives.

“GE - Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. Tubing has made great strides in 2008 in their journey towards health and safety excellence,” says Larry Masotti, Manager Consulting Services Ontario. “Going from a Level I to a Level II award in less than a year shows how committed people are to making this facility as safe as possible. Everyone here has played an important role in achieving this milestone and you are to be congratulated on your efforts towards reducing workplace incidents.”

“The high level of employee care and participation in our health and safety system has made this award possible,” says Mark Ward, Fuel Operations Manager, GE - Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. Tubing. “GE’s Global Star Health and Safety Excellence program combined with IAPA’s Health and Safety Achievement Award program helps ensure that this facility is safe for everyone who steps into this facility. It’s great to see that our work in health and safety is making a difference in creating an environment where no accidents and incidents will be tolerated.”

To qualify for this award, GE – Hitachi Nuclear Energy Canada Inc. Tubing completed a comprehensive self-assessment report that showed how the firm built on its Level I achievement. In addition, IAPA conducted an on-site verification of its health and safety management systems on July 11, 2008. The first level recognizes workplaces for ensuring that their health and safety programs meet basic legislative requirements and management practices, as well as a LTI frequency lower than its rate group average for a 12-month period. Each level builds on this foundation.

IAPA ’s three-level health and safety awards program was launched in 2002. The program is designed to celebrate an organization’s journey towards achieving workplace health and safety excellence. Since the inception of the program, 11 companies have received the Level II Health and Safety Achievement Award.
